Check drinker height and flow rate for the pig size in the pen. If the stream is too weak, pigs may not consume enough. If it is too forceful, water waste rises and pigs may avoid the drinker. Wet areas should not be dismissed as proof that pigs are drinking well. The most practical approach is usually targeted and temporary. Offer the product during the period of highest stress or when early signs point to reduced hydration risk, then return to a normal water program once pigs are drinking reliably. Leaving a flavored or supplemented water source in place without a clear reason can make it harder to evaluate actual water intake and may add cost without improving results.

Follow the manufacturer’s mixing rate precisely. More powder or liquid concentrate is not better. A solution that is too concentrated can reduce palatability, interfere with water intake, and create inconsistent results from pen to pen. Use clean mixing equipment, fresh water, and enough agitation to distribute the product evenly.

If medication is also being delivered through the water system, confirm compatibility before combining products. Some water additives can change pH, interfere with solubility, or affect how a medication performs. Keep records of what was used, when it was delivered, the water source, and the group’s response. Watch the pigs rather than relying only on the product schedule. Productive observations include whether pigs are actively visiting drinkers, how quickly feed disappears, manure consistency, room temperature, and the number of pigs that appear hollow-flanked or slow to rise. Consider whether you need a product for short-term water supplementation, individual support, or use in a more specific recovery situation. Measure the result, not just the effort

A good electrolyte decision should be tied to outcomes that matter on the farm. Compare treated groups with previous turns or similar groups when possible. One metric alone rarely tells the complete story.

There is a cost trade-off. Electrolytes add an input cost, and they take time to mix and monitor. But if targeted use helps a stressed group resume drinking sooner, reduces the depth of a post-weaning setback, or supports more uniform pigs moving into the next stage, the investment may be justified.
