The key is not simply putting out any product labelled “sheep.” A mineral program has to match the forage base, water, class of sheep, other feeds, and whether sheep share space with cattle, goats, or horses. A practical choice begins with understanding why copper matters and what a complete copper-free sheep mineral should still deliver.
Why sheep need mineral without copper
Copper is an essential nutrient, but the safe range is narrow for sheep. Unlike cattle and goats, sheep can retain copper in the liver for months without obvious outward signs. Stress, illness, poor weather, transport, late pregnancy, or a sudden diet change can trigger the release of stored copper into the bloodstream. The result may be acute copper toxicity, including weakness, jaundice, dark-colored urine, rapid losses, and deaths that can appear to come without warning.
