Dear LNS Family,

A Friendly Reminder: Forage Changes & Stover Grazing
As autumn settles in and pastures slow down and go dormant, the nutritional value your animals pull from grazing alone starts to drop β protein and energy decline while fiber climbs, even when there's still plenty of grass standing in the field. It's a normal seasonal shift, but one worth planning around.
For those turning cattle out onto corn stalks or other crop residue this fall, stover grazing deserves its own bit of attention. Stover can be a great, economical feed source after harvest, but quality drops quickly as animals graze through it β they tend to select the better leaf and husk material first, leaving behind the lower-quality stalk, which means both energy and protein intake can decline the longer cattle stay on a field. Grazing distribution, field conditions, and any downed or moldy ears are also worth keeping an eye on.
A forage or stover test is the best way to know exactly what your animals are working with, and it can help you decide whether a protein or mineral supplement makes sense to fill the gap as the season moves along. As always, if you'd like help interpreting a test or building a supplementation plan, just give us a call or send us an email.
Tool Spotlight: The LNS Nutrition App
Fall is exactly the kind of season the LNS Nutrition App was built for. Between changing forage quality, stover grazing, and shifting rations, it's easy for gaps to creep into a nutrition program without anyone noticing β the LNS Nutrition App puts professional-grade ration analysis right in your pocket so you can catch those gaps early.

Beyond flagging straightforward shortfalls, the app's Gap Analysis is a great way to take a closer look at your mineral program this time of year. Fall forages and crop residues can carry elevated sulfur, molybdenum, or iron β all well-known antagonists that can tie up copper and other trace minerals before your animals ever get the benefit of them. Building out your full ration in the app, including water and mineral sources, gives you a clearer picture of where those antagonists might be working against you, so you can adjust before deficiencies show up in the herd.
Thank you for being part of the LNS family, old friends and new. We're grateful for each of you and looking forward to a great October together.
Warmly,
The Team at Livestock Nutrition Supplies, LLC
